AgriGenomics - An international Master`s Program for agricultural genomics at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel

What is agricultural genomics?

Agricultural genomics (AgriGenomics) is the application of genomics in agriculture to improve the productivity and sustainability in crop and livestock production.

Why study AgriGenomics?

Since the beginning of the century, our knowledge of genome composition and gene function has increased tremendously. The shift from single gene to whole genome analysis and the complete sequencing of higher eukaryotic genomes and transcriptomes offer the possibility to understand how all genes work together. These recent advancements have great impact on agricultural research. Analyzing whole genomes will give further insights into evolutionary processes and how modern crops and livestock arose from their ancestors. Furthermore, we can genotypically select individuals based on whole genome sequences or whole genome SNP arrays.
There is an increasing demand for specialists who understand both, the fundamentals of agricultural production and the application of genomics for breeding and production of crops and livestock.

The international Master´s Program AgriGenomics

Due to the growing importance of genomics in plant and animal breeding, the Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel has established an international Master's Degree Program in Agricultural Genomics which has been launched in October 2011 after accreditation by a national accreditation agency.

This newly designed full time post-graduate Master's Program is intended for students who hold a Bachelor's degree in agriculture or a related field with fundamental knowledge in genetics, molecular biology, botany and zoology. Classes will be held in English and are open for students from all over the world with interest in crop and livestock production

Career Perspectives

The Master's Program AgriGenomics in Kiel teaches the most current knowledge in the application of genomic techniques for improving crops and livestock. As the program is not limited to either animal or plant sciences, it offers multidisciplinary qualification in the field of agricultural genomics to prepare the students for a broad spectrum of job positions.

Students specialized in AgriGenomics will be qualified to take a leading position in life science and breeding companies to apply genome techniques for breeding and improvement of crop and animal production. Moreover, with an MSc in AgriGenomics students will be highly qualified to begin a doctoral course to start a career in science or research and development.
