Application procedure and admission


The deadline for applications for the winter semester is May 31 every year

Please first create a user account on the application portal. Afterwards you can log in to the application portal anytime during the application period using your registered email address and password to fill in the application form and upload your documents.

It should be mentioned that accepted applicants will later have to provide the originals for enrollment at the university of Kiel.

German applicants who have not yet received their final BSc certificate please visit this webpage (only available in German):

Students from China, Vietnam, Mongolia and Taiwan need to add an APS certificate to their application.

Successful students will be selected by a selection committee on the beginning of June each year. The decision will be made according to the following parameters:

  • Bachelor Degree (qualification, study courses, marks)
  • Letter of motivation
  • English knowledge
  • Further qualifications (previous work, internships and others)

Selected students will receive an email shortly after the selection committee has made its decision. A final letter of admission will be sent by the International Center of the University of Kiel which will also explain the enrolment procedure.


Successful applicants must have a bachelor degree in agricultural science, biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, genetics and related disciplines with an ECTS grade of B- or higher.

Language requirements

As all classes are given in English, a good level of English (written as well as spoken) is mandatory. Accepted as proof for language proficiency are:

  • 550 points in TOEFL® ITP-paper based (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

  • 230 points in TOEFL-Computer based (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

  • 90 points in TOEFL-Internet based (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

  • 6.5 points in IELTS, no band less than 6 (International English Language Testing Sys-tem)

  • 8 years of English classes at German Schools in "Sekundarstufe I und II"

  • a stay of 6 months in a native English speaking country
